Cosplay is a contraction of two words – costume and play. It is a performance art where by participants, also known as “cosplayers”, wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character.

These characters are drawn from pop culture. They could be from manga and anime, comic books and cartoons, video games, live-action films, and television series. Originally, cosplay was all about dressing as characters from comic books, but with time, other characters from movies and pop culture have being included into the fun of cosplaying.

Albeit the concept of dressing like fictional characters have been around as early as the 1920s, the word “cosplay” was coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi  while attending the 42nd World Science Fiction Convention (World Con), Los Angeles, in 1984, and even since then, the lingo has stuck around.

Cosplay and Halloween parties should not be confused to mean similar things. These two have different origins. Halloween, which holds every October 31st, focuses on the holiday alone. Conversely, at cosplay, people can wear whatever they want in order to imitate a character. The cosplayers affect accents, mannerisms, and words. Companies often get models to dress as cosplayers. This is in a bid to promote the characters in any of their works.

Cosplay is an important part of Lagos Comic Con. In previous editions, people have come out to show how well they are good with costumes from different pop culture movies and comics. At Lagos Comic Con, it seems as though the characters step out the screen, as cosplayers are good at putting their costumes together.

Cosplaying infuses more fun into Lagos Comic Con, as it gives people the chance to be their favourite pop culture character, not just in dressing. Someone can be Superman. He gets to dress as Superman; he talks like Superman, if he can; he walks around like Superman. Everyone gets to address him as Superman. That is the fun of it!

It gets more interesting because there is an award for the best cosplayers. This is based on different criteria – costume, delivery and performance, to mention a few.

This year at Comic Con, the best cosplayers would go home with the sum of N150,000 cash! There is so much to look forward to this year.
